Packing and Storage Tips
Packing efficiently for self storage unit is good to save space and to protect your belongings from possible damage. You need to be highly organized so you do not have to dig something out every time you visit the storage facility. Planning ahead is absolutely essential to save time and effort. You need to plan what you will store and prioritize it according to your need. You also have to group your belongings by its fragility, weight, use and importance. Here are some helpful tips:
• Inventory and planning. Looking around and deciding what you want to access often will help your packing. It is necessary to know what are heaviest and lightest items so you can plan where to put them. You also need to consider items that require climate storage unit. Do you have electronic equipment, clothes, artwork, photographs and valuable items that need special consideration? Knowing these details will help you choose a right self storage space.
• Packing supplies. Use quality sturdy boxes for ample protection and heavy weight. Bubble wrap, paper, packing tape and other packing supplies should be prepared ahead for efficient packing.
• Box packing. In packing boxes, make sure to fill it up to its capacity and leave no empty spaces. Half-empty boxes can shift during transport and damage its content. You can use fillers and old clothing for extra padding. If you use Styrofoam pellets, keep them in a plastic bag, for easy removal.
Fragile items should be wrapped individually with bubble wrap before placing it in the box.
If possible, put everything in the box to protect the items from the dust.
• Labeling. Label every boxes you pack. It will save you time whenever you need access to it. Label the boxes “fragile” for breakable items for its protection. Masking tape is great for this.
• Big and heavy items. If you have something too big to fit in the box, protect it with bags or sheet. Large appliances with exposed areas in the back like oven and refrigerator should be covered, so pests can't get in. Heavy items, like piano, need professional help and movers. Do not risk damaging it by trying to do it yourself.
Unpacking and Storage
Arrange your items in the storage area carefully and efficiently. Consider the following tips:
• Before unpacking, consider placing protective sheet or wooden boards on the floor for dust protection.
• Take advantage of your space by stacking boxes as full height as possible. Keep a folded stool or small ladder in the unit to be used in reaching higher items. Its worthwhile to purchase things that will help you pack and store.
• Frequently used items should be placed near the door for easy access while occasional items in the farthest. Valuable items should also be in the farthest behind other items to keep it hidden.
• Maximize your space by disassembling items that can be done so. For instance, taking off the legs of the tables, disassemble bed frames and others. Place them in the far end leaning against the wall.
• Largest items should be placed against the wall. Heaviest items should be in the bottom and lightest on the top. Consider putting them at the back.
• Do not forget to leave a walkway for easy access to your items. Leave an aisle between your stacks of boxes and furniture.
